Interview with Latifa Al-Darwish

As a Qatari filmmaker and animator, Latifa Al-Darwish is always tapping into her local culture for inspiration. Her childhood memories of family time, TV shows, and folk stories told by her grandmother, help inspire her work. In this interview she emphasizes the importance of having nuanced and local stories.
Latifa Al-Darwish is a filmmaker, and communications specialist for the Ministry of Defense in Qatar. She is known for her abstract animation Yaoum Al Om (Mother’s Day), which was included in the exhibition Transition: emerging Middle Eastern artists, at the Menier Gallery in London in 2017. She has also received a Qatari Film Fund grant from Doha Film Institute to produce her upcoming film, Ya Hootah. She is a graduate of Northwestern University in Qatar, class of 2013.
