Stereotypes are complicated and can be difficult to understand, but very easy to spread. In this interview Karine Walther explains how stereotypes formalize, normalize and then spread. She touches on how government bodies use stereotypes of Arabs to support their agendas and gain public support for their campaigns.

Karine Walther is Associate Professor of History at Georgetown University in Qatar. She is a historian and sociologist, and the author of Sacred Interests: The United States and the Islamic World, 1821-1921 (University of North Carolina Press, 2015). She is currently working on her second book titled Spreading the Faith: American Missionaries, ARAMCO and the Birth of the US-Saudi Special Relationship, 1890-1955.
