Animation can have as much, if not more, of an impact on identity portrayals than film. Animator and artist Sulafa Hijazi shares her experiences as an Arab working in Europe, and explains the opportunities that animation can provide when telling a story.

Sulafa Hijazi is a director and multimedia artist based in Germany. She was a founding member of Spacetoon, the first free Arabic satellite channel for children, and in 2010 created the digital production house Bluedar, in Damascus and Beirut. Her work has been shown in international festivals receiving several awards, most notably for her feature animation film The Jasmine Birds (2009), and feature in collections around the world, including the British Museum in London, and the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, UAE.
