Interview with Khalid Albaih

In Sudan he is considered an Arab. In the Arab world he is considered African. In this interview Khalid Albaih speaks about his own struggle with his personal identity, and how he interacts with stereotypes in his work as a cartoonist.

Khalid Albaih is an artist in residence for the city of Copenhagen, Denmark, as part of the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN). He is an artist and political cartoonist—often publishing under the name ‘Khartoon’—formally based in Sudan and Qatar. His cartoons have appeared in publications including The New York Times, the Guardian, BBC, and Al Jazeera. His work has been exhibited in several festivals and exhibitions ranging from Boston, USA, to New Delhi, most recently as a solo exhibition at Asakusa Art Space in Tokyo (2017).
