What is Journalism?

2020

From selfies to citizen journalism, kittens to tsunamis, billions of videos and photos are posted to social media daily. But is this news? Is social media a legitimate source? Do you consider citizen journalism robust reporting? The culture and architecture of journalism is continually evolving and as a result the production, distribution and consumption of news is continuously being redefined, reconsidered and reappropriated. A device—the smartphone—is enabling more and more people to participate in the consumption, sharing, amplification and creation of news—but is this a good thing? Asking and unpacking a series of questions this animation film challenges different understandings and experience of journalism—blowing apart definitions to expose what journalism is, was, can and could be from different angles and perspectives.

This animation was commissioned by the museum as part of the 2020–2021 exhibition Breaking News? how the smartphone changed journalism. All rights reserved.
