Here Katherine Hennessey talks us through the emergence of theater as a form of creative expression in the Middle East, with particular focus on the Arabian Peninsula. Her interview sheds light on key figures, performances and popular movements which held transnational appeal, as well as productions which were affected or suppressed by colonial or state powers.

 

Katherine Hennessey is Assistant Dean at the American University of Kuwait. She researches and writes about performances of Shakespeare around the world, with a particular focus on the performing arts in Yemen and other parts of the Arabian Peninsula. She also teaches Italian language and literature, and has taught courses on English literature and Irish theater, at universities in the Middle East.
