Lina Ghaibeh discusses the trajectory of caricature and illustrated comics as a mode of expression in the Middle East and North Africa in this interview. Aspects include the early use of comics aimed at children for educational purposes, the dissemination of nationalist propaganda in countries such as Egypt and Lebanon, and the use of satire cartoons in newspapers in its ‘golden age’ after the 1967 war.
Lina Ghaibeh is Associate Professor of Design at the American University of Beirut (AUB), Director of the Mu’taz and Rada Sawwaf Arabic Comics Initiative at AUB, and coordinator of the university’s graphic design program. Her research focuses on comics from the Arab world as part of contemporary Arab culture, with her most recent articles discussing the role of Arabic comics after the Arab uprisings, and women in comics from the Arab world and North Africa. She is a practicing comic and animation artist.
