Here Amal Al-Malki reflects on how women have been represented in pop culture from the region, touching on figures of note including Nawal El Sadawwi and Doria Shafik in print, Jamila Bouhired and Leila Khaled on film and television, Shirin Neshat and Boushra Almutawakel in photography and film. She discusses how changing legislation might have affected participation in media by women, with regards to visibility, distribution and accessibility.

 

Dr. Amal Mohammed Al-Malki is Founding Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hamad bin Khalifa University in Qatar. Prior to that she served as Executive Director of the Translation and Interpreting Institute, which she founded in 2011 on Education City in Doha. She has also served as Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar where she taught courses in writing composition, postcolonial literature, theories of translation, and Islamic feminism.
