"First Person Scroller" is a visual essay by Superposition and Idil Galip, commissioned by Media Majlis Museum. It provides audiences with a comprehensive understanding of memes as powerful cultural forces that shape consciousness, influence behavior, and connect humanity across time and digital space. It raises the question of individual agency and responsibility in the digital age: How do we distinguish between authentic and manufactured cultural content, and what role do we choose to play in shaping the stories that define our collective consciousness? Memes have history that can be traced up to early cave paintings, but digital technology has accelerated meme circulation from decades to hours, fundamentally changing their power and reach. We live in an age of endless digital scrolling that leads to constant interactions with memes on various platforms. The distinction between authentic grassroots memes and artificially manufactured ones is increasingly blurred now with the proliferation of AI. This visual essay stipulates that individual agency exists in the moment before sharing, each person has the power to question, choose, and shape cultural narratives. Memes serve as digital connection points that affirm shared human experience: "I am here. And so are you."
