In this interview Basma Hamdy reveals the power of typography and the Arabic script to challenge, empower and unify. Examples include creative initiatives that address inequalities in gender and toxic associations between the Arabic language and terrorism.

Basma Hamdy is a research-based designer, author and Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar. She is co-author of Walls of Freedom: Street Art of the Egyptian Revolution (2014) and Khatt: Egypt's Calligraphic Landscape (2018) and has been interviewed extensively in international media, including by The New York Times, The National, TRT World, Fast Company, Jadaliyya, Huck, Der Spiegel and Print.
